Christian philosopher St. Augustine said that our emotions often function like smoke from a fire. They tell us what is really going on in our heart. The emotion of depression is complex, involving the spiritual, biological, and social aspects of our makeup. It often begins with discouragement. Lamentations is an Old Testament book written by the prophet Jeremiah during a time of extreme discouragement. In chapter 3, we see how his faith is honest before God, but it doesn’t stop with the bleakness. Lamentations 3:21–23 is the anchor point for a life of pain and misery: Remember the goodness of God!
